- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup cabbage, chopped
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Whisk together the sourdough starter, milk, and melted butter in a large bowl until combined.
- Sprinkle in the salt, and gradually fold in the flour one cup at a time until you create a soft, slightly sticky dough.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Allow it to rise in a warm area for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat, then add the chopped onions and cook until translucent.
- Mix in the ground beef and cook until browned.
- Fold in the diced cabbage, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, stirring until the cabbage softens.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to approximately 1/8-inch thick.
- Spoon a generous portion of the savory beef mixture into the center of each piece.
- Fold the dough over to enclose the filling, pinching the edges tightly.
- Place each Runza on a parchment-lined baking sheet, brush with egg wash.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
