Description
Delicious and versatile sourdough sandwich bread with a crusty exterior and soft interior, perfect for sandwiches or toast.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups active sourdough starter
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 5 – 6 cups bread flour
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- Combine the active sourdough starter with warm water and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Stir gently until smooth.
- Add 3 cups of bread flour gradually, mixing with a wooden spoon until a wet mixture forms.
- Sprinkle in the salt and pour in the olive oil. Gradually incorporate remaining flour until it pulls away from the bowl’s sides.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl and cover with a towel. Let rise until doubled in size (4 to 6 hours).
- Punch the dough down gently, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased loaf pan. Allow to rise again for 2 to 3 hours.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Let cool completely before slicing.
Notes
For best results, ensure your sourdough starter is active. Consider adding herbs or cheese for extra flavor.
